Covent Garden can trace it roots back to roman times. During Saxon times the area around Covent garden down to strand lane was a busy growing trading settlement. It’s mainly associated with the fruit and veg market in the central square which itself has now become a famous tourist attraction and popular shopping destination, the area is also home to the Royal Opera House which is also commonly known as “Covent Garden”. The north is home to many independent shops centred around Neal’s Yard and Seven Dials. The southern portion contains the central square with street performers and home to many fine architectural buildings, theatres and places of entertainment such as the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane, and the London Transport Museum.

The area was briefly settled by the Anglo Saxons in around the 7th century when it became the heart of a trading town known as Lundewic which was eventually abandoned by the 9th century with the possible threat from Viking invaders. By the 1200’s it was walled off by Westminster Abbey for use as farming land and orchards known as the garden of abbey and Covent which later became its modern name of Covent garden. The land was seized by Henry VII and granted to the Earls of Bedford who in turn commissioned nice elegant houses to be built to attract wealthy tenants.
