Covent Garden can trace it roots back to roman times. During Saxon times the area around Covent garden down to strand lane was a busy growing trading settlement. By the 1200’s it was walled off by Westminster Abbey for use as farming land and orchards known as the garden of abbey and Covent which later became its modern name of Covent garden. The land was seized by Henry VII and granted to the Earls of Bedford who in turn commissioned nice elegant houses to be built to attract wealthy tenants.
